Chinese

Chinese Language and Culture 10-3Y
5 Credits
Prerequisite: None
Learning a second language has become an important and interesting part of being a global citizen. This introductory level course will offer you a good look at China’s unique ancient history and its eye-opening development of modern days. You will meet new friends, experience a new culture and, at the same time, acquire sufficient vocabulary and skills for short conversations with people who speak Chinese.

Chinese Language and Culture 20-3Y
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese Language and Culture 10-3Y

 This is a full year five credit course.  It is a continuation of Chinese Language and Culture 10 and is designed for students who wish to build on what they have learned in the beginning level.  The class is mainly focused on Chinese as spoken in day-to-day life in a variety of topics such as weather, clothing, hobbies, school life and school facilities.  Speaking, reading, writing and listening skills are all integrated and emphasized.  Students’ vocabulary will expand up to five hundred words with more sentence patterns and structures.


Chinese Language and Culture 30-3Y
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese Language and Culture 20-3Y
This is a full year five credit course.  It is a continuation of Chinese Language and Culture 20 and is designed for students who wish to further build on what they have learned in the intermediate level.  The class is mainly focused on Chinese as spoken in day-to-day life in a variety of topics such as shopping, food, health, public facilities and media.  Speaking, reading, writing and listening skills are all integrated and emphasized.  Students will acquire up to eight hundred characters and master most commonly used grammatical rules of Chinese.

Chinese Language and Culture 10-6Y
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese 7 - 9
In this course you will become more comfortable and confident in using the language. You will have the chance to speak, write, read, create multi-media presentations and perform in Chinese. The different activities associated with Chinese culture will also keep your learning fun. In the future, your Chinese language skills will help you become highly competitive in our global job market.

Chinese Language and Culture 20-6Y
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese Language and Culture 10-6Y
This is a full year five credit course designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese Language and Culture 10-6Y.  Students will acquire more vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to improve their speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension skills.  Students will be able to use words and expressions in a range of contexts such as health, safety, celebrations, relationships and communications.  Students will also participate in Chinese cultural experiences which will help them to identify aspects of Chinese traditions and life styles.

Chinese Language and Culture 30-6Y
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese Language and Culture 20-6Y
This is a full year five credit course designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese Language and Culture 20-6Y.  Students will acquire more vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to improve their speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension skills.  Students will be able to use words and expressions in a range of contexts such as future plans, media, popular culture, science and technology.  Students will also participate in Chinese cultural experiences which will help them to identify aspects of Chinese history, literature and education systems.

Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts 10
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese Language Arts 9
This course will offer you the opportunity to explore, in depth, many aspects of this unique language. A wide range of themes such as sports, travel, holidays and relationships will be covered. In the future, your sophisticated Chinese language skills will benefit you greatly in the global economy and our multicultural society.

Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts 20  
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts 10
This is a full year five credit course.  It is intended for those students who have successfully completed Chinese Language Arts 10.  This course aims to build on students’ success and help them to further enhance their listening, speaking, writing and viewing skills and abilities to understand and appreciate the Chinese language and use it confidently and competently.  This course focuses on studies and analysis of texts that cover topics like family issues, media, religion, life styles and other topics that meet the needs and interests of students.  At the same time, materials that reflect on Chinese literature and language are also looked at in depth, such as ancient Chinese poems and proverbs, classic and modern essays and articles, as well as more complicated sentence structures and vocabulary exercises.  Lots of independent and group work is involved for students to develop skills in areas like critical thinking, information researching, problem solving, public speaking and using technologies.

Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts 30
5 Credits
Prerequisite: Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts 20
This is a full year five credit course.  This course continues to build on students’ success and help them perfect their listening, speaking, writing and viewing skills and abilities to understand and appreciate the Chinese language and use it confidently and competently.  This course focuses on studies and analysis of texts that cover topics like education, career options, environment protection, health and fitness, crimes and justice, and other topics that meet the needs and interests of students.  At the same time, materials that reflect on Chinese literature and language are also looked at in depth, such as ancient Chinese poems and proverbs, classic and modern essays and articles, as well as more complicated sentence structures and vocabulary exercises.  Lots of independent and group work is involved for students to develop skills in areas like critical thinking, information researching, problem solving, public speaking and using technologies.
