Students wanting to study in the grade 11 & 12 IB Programme enter LaZerte’s “IB Preparation” year in grade 10. Official IB content begins in grade 11. IB exams are written in May of the grade 12 year and are listed (in brackets) in the chart below.
In grades 11 & 12, you will need to take six IB courses: 1)English, 2)History, 3)Biology, 4)Math, 5)Mandarin/French or Spanish, 6)Chemistry/Physics or Theatre Arts. In addition, as a full IB student you will take Theory of Knowledge (TOK), complete Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) volunteer requirements and complete an Extended Essay.
English 10-1 (IB Preparation)

Prerequisite: 75% in L.A. 9 recommended
English 10-1 (IB Preparation) is for students who intend to go to university and who demonstrate a love of literature and a desire to explore world literature. IB is an excellent choice for students who are intellectually curious. In this program, students read and write extensively as well as work on individual and/or group presentations. Students are also encouraged to attend cultural events to broaden their knowledge of our world. Did you know that J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, lists Shakespeare as one of her major influences? Rowling’s last four books have been the fastest selling books in history!
English 20-1 IB

Prerequisite: 70% in English 10-1 B
This course begins the two-year International Baccalaureate Program which consists of four parts: world literature, detailed study, groups of works and school-based choice. The course is designed for students who enjoy literature, who desire challenge, and who commit to writing well. Students can expect their marks in this course to be comparable to their potential grade in regular English 20-1. The works of literature studied in IB at this level involve evaluation of both oral and written skills.
World Literature 35 IB

Prerequisite: 70% in English 10-1 B
This course accompanies English 20-1 IB and allows students more extensive practice in the close reading and critical analysis of literature required for the IB oral and written examinations. Students will complete two World Literature papers to fulfull IB external assessment criteria.
English 30-1 IB
5 Credits
Prerequisite: 70% in English 20-1 IB
This course completes the two-year International Baccalaureate Program and can only be taken by students who have completed English 20 IB and World Literature 35 IB. It involves a close study of the art of the novel, an oral exam and a final IB exam. Students will also prepare for the Alberta Diploma Examination. The course is designed for motivated students who enjoy reading and writing analytically.
Social Studies 10-1 (IB Preparation)

Prerequisite: 75% in Social Studies 9 recommended
Economists analyze, forecast or advise on economic conditions. Historians study, analyze and record data on past events, institutions, ideas and people to gain a better understanding of the present. Sociologists examine and analyze the function and influence of groups. So what do all these people have in common? They are engaged in analyzing the world and its people! In other words, they are engaged in the study of the social sciences. In Social Studies 10-1 (IB Preparation) you will be examining globalization and analyzing the benefits and costs associated with it. Being an IB prep. student means that you will attempt to understand and appreciate both your own culture and personal history, as well as be open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals. This ability to be open-minded means that a career as a lawyer, professor, psychologist or social worker may be just the one for you!
Social Studies 20-1 IB

Prerequisite: 70% in Social Studies 10-1 (IB Preparation)
In this course students will study major trends in Europe in the period from the mid 18th century to the end of the 20th century. In particular, students will examine the origins of nationalism and the influence of nationalism on regional, international, and global relations. Areas of focus will include the French Revolution, the Napoleonic era, World War I, and World War II. Students will learn and practice the skill of writing both a position paper and a historical investigation.
Social Studies 30-1 IB

Prerequisite: 70% in Social Studies 20-1 IB
Students study 20th century European History from the Russian Revolution through World Wars I and II and the Cold War Period in preparation for an IB European History exam in May. The course emphasizes an in-depth study of history with an emphasis on analytical thinking and essay writing skills which prepare them for university level work. Students will also study economic and political systems of the 20th century which, along with a study of global interaction, will prepare them for the Alberta Diploma Examination in June.
Western World History 30 IB

Prerequisite: 70% in Social Studies 20-1 IB
This course must be taken with Social Studies 30-1 IB.
Students will examine the major global historical events of the 20th century in preparation for the IB History exam. The course emphasizes critical thinking in the context of conflict and cooperation in an international context.
Math 10C (Combined) (IB Preparation)
5 Credits
Prerequisite: 75% in Math 9 recommended
If you have a love of learning and want to explore new ideas, then IB math is for you. You will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of concepts in mathematics through finding patterns and using models to understand the complexity of a variety of scenarios. Strong algebraic skills are required for this course. Enrichment topics will be added as required.
Mathematics 20 Pure IB
5 Credits
Prerequisite: 60% in Mathematics 10C (Combined) (IB Prep)
This course builds on the skills learned in Math 10 Pure IB. In this course you will study a variety of types of functions and equations, including quadratic, polynomial, rational, radical and absolute value. You will also study mathematical reasoning, geometry and finance. Enrichment topics will be added as required.
Mathematics 30 Pure IB

Prerequisite: 60% in Mathematics 20 IB
This course meets all of the requirements as set out by Alberta Education for Mathematics 30 Pure. Specific academic extensions will be added from the IB Mathematics curriculum as required. Upon completion of this course students will write the Mathematics 30 Pure Diploma Exam as required by Alberta Education.
Mathematics 31 IB

Prerequisite: Mathematics 30 Pure IB
This course will complete the Mathematics IB sequence. Calculus is the central topic of this course. University level extended material will be added to provide the necessary background to allow these students to write the Mathematics IB Calculus exam. It will be offered as a full year course in the Grade 12 year for all Mathematics IB students.
IB Math Studies
Prerequisite: Math 30 Pure IB
This grade 12 IB course is for students who do not require calculus for their post-secondary studies. Students will gain a deeper understanding of Statistics and Probability, as well as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, financial math and some calculus. They must also complete a project for their internal assessment for the IB mark. In addition to receiving an IB mark, students will also have the opportunity to upgrade their Math 30 Pure mark.
Science 10 (IB Preparation)

Science has an impact that touches all parts of our globe and society: from industry to environmentalism, atoms to galaxies, nature to machines. The scientific community has developed a voice that helps society make responsible and knowledgeable decisions. Science provokes the creative mind to innovate advances in technology. It helps our species understand the workings of the universe. Science 10 (IB Prep.) is the first step into this community of global leaders, advisers and problem solvers. Understand the basics of chemistry, biology and physics while looking at the issues that surround one of the globe’s largest upcoming problems – climate change.
Biology 20 IB

Prerequisite: 60% in Science 10 (IB Prep)
Explore the concepts of Evolution, Biochemistry and Human Systems in Biology 20 IB. Look at the scientific evidence that provides one suggestion as to how the human species came into being. Gain an understanding of how the chemicals and systems within your body work to provide every cell what it needs to survive. Laboratory experimentation is emphasized in this course in order to create an IB Biology portfolio for the IB Program.
Biology 35 IB

Biology 35 IB is a course that goes in conjunction with Biology 20 IB. In this three credit course, you will be exploring the biological information that is required by the IB program that falls outside of the Alberta Education Curriculum.
Biology 30 IB

Prerequisite: 60% in Biology 20 IB
Explore the concepts of Genetics, Reproduction, The Nervous System and Neurobiology as Biology 30 IB builds upon the concepts established in Biology 20 IB. Laboratory experiments will be integrated with course work in order to create an IB Biology portfolio for the IB Program.
Chemistry 20 IB

Prerequisite: 60% in Science 10 (IB Prep)
Chemistry 20 IB builds upon the Chemistry foundation that was established in Science 10 IB. Atomic Bonding, Solutions, Acids and Bases, Gases and Stoichiometry are the topics covered in this course. Laboratory experimentation is emphasized in order to create an IB Chemistry portfolio for the IB Program.
Chemistry 30 IB

Prerequisite: 60% in Chemistry 20 IB
Enter the worlds of Organic Chemistry, Thermochemistry, Oxidation and Reduction, Equilibrium, and Acids and Bases. Continue to build your Chemistry foundation as you explore more complex chemical reactions. Use your knowledge of Chemistry to then create a variety of technologies such as synthetic organic molecules and batteries. Laboratory experimentation is emphasized in order to create an IB Chemistry portfolio for the IB Program.
Chemistry 35 IB

Chemistry 35 IB is a course that goes in conjunction with Chemistry 30 IB. In this three credit course, you will be exploring the Chemistry content that is required by the IB program that falls outside of the Alberta Education Curriculum.
Physics 20 IB

Prerequisite: 60% in Science 10 (IB Prep)
Physics 20 IB students will develop experimental and analytical skills while exploring the social and historical aspects of the amazing and exhilarating world of Physics. Kinematics, Dynamics, Forces and Equilibrium, Simple Harmonic Motion, Uniform Circular Motion, Gravity and Waves are the topics covered within this course. Laboratory experimentation is emphasized in order to create an IB Physics portfolio for the IB Program.

Early in the history of science, physicists were theoreticians, experimenters and natural philosophers. In Physics 30 IB, students will become aware of the free and rapid interplay that exists between the theoretical ideas, mathematical calculations and experimental results. Explore the worlds of Momentum, Electricity, Magnetism, Light, and Atomic Physics as you learn how theoretical ideas create the technologies you use everyday. Laboratory experimentation is emphasized in order to create an IB Physics portfolio for the IB Program.

In this course you will learn basic expressions and vocabulary related to introductions, descriptions of family and friends, preferences, sport and leisure activities, clothing, food, school, and select holidays and celebrations. You will develop listening and speaking skills, gain an understanding of French pronunciation and spelling, as well as basic sentence structure and grammatical concepts in order to read and write the French language. You will also gain a cultural understanding of la francophonie that will allow you to communicate in French while traveling and to pursue an interesting career.

Emphasis is placed on all four language skills—listening and reading comprehension and oral and written production. In this course you will study the themes of senses and feelings, close friends, fads and fashions, consumerism and outdoor life. You will also deepen your understanding of Francophone cultures.

In this senior level course, you will further develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with a focus on communication. You will review and expand your vocabulary and grammatical knowledge and use it to produce oral and written projects. You will also further develop your understanding of Francophone cultures. Familiar topics such as sports and health, housing, fads and fashion, the media, the world of work, travel and tourism will be addressed in preparation for the IB language exams.
Chinese Language and Culture 10-3Y (IB Preparation)

Learning a second language has become an important and interesting part of being a global citizen. This introductory level course will offer you a good look at China’s unique ancient history and its eye-opening development of modern days. You will meet new friends, experience a new culture and, at the same time, acquire sufficient vocabulary and skills for short conversations with people who speak Chinese. In the IB preparation section of this course you will fast-track to a higher level of proficiency in all language skills.
Chinese Language and Culture 20-3Y

This is a full year five credit course. It is a continuation of Chinese Language and Culture 10 and is designed for students who wish to build on what they have learned in the beginning level. The class is mainly focused on Chinese as spoken in day-to-day life in a variety of topics such as weather, clothing, hobbies, school life and school facilities. Speaking, reading, writing and listening skills are all integrated and emphasized. Students’ vocabulary will expand up to five hundred words with more sentence patterns and structures.
Chinese Language and Culture 30-3Y AB IB

Prerequisite: 70% in Chinese Language and Culture 20-3Y AB IB
This course is designed for those students who have completed Chinese Language and Culture 20 (Introductory IB) and wish to attain their IB certificate or diploma. Because students in this course will take the IB Ab Initio exam at the end of their third year, this course will be fast-tracked and intensive. The focus will start to shift onto reading comprehension and writing skills during the second year while students continue to build on what they have learned in the beginning level and improve on their speaking and listening. It is a progressive course that provides continuity of learning and lots of specific help to get students ready for their final goal with 15 credits earned over three years.

This course is designed for those students who have completed Chinese Language and Culture 30 (Introductory IB) and who wish to attain their IB certificate or diploma. During this last year of learning, the focus will start to shift onto textual studies, language analysis and literature appreciation while students continue to enhance their speaking, listening, reading nd writing skills with the help of practices in researching, problem solving, critical thinking, public speaking and using technologies. It is a progressive course that provides continuity of learning and lots of specific help to get students ready for their final goal with 15 credits earned over three years.
Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts 20 IB

This is a full year five-credit course. It is intended for those students who have successfully completed Chinese Language Arts 10. This course aims to build on students’ success and help them to further enhance their listening, speaking, writing and viewing skills and abilities to understand and appreciate the Chinese language and use it confidently and competently. This course focuses on studies and analysis of texts that cover topics such as career options, consumerism, media, public institutions, travel and other topics that meet the needs and interests of students. At the same time, materials that reflect on Chinese literature and language are also looked at in depth, such as ancient Chinese poems and proverbs, classic and modern essays and articles, as well as more complicated sentence structures and vocabulary exercises. Lots of independent and group work is involved for students to develop skills in areas like critical thinking, information researching, problem solving, public speaking and using technologies.

This is a full year five-credit course. Since this is the final year of the Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts course, one of the goals is to prepare students for their IB Exam in May. At the same time, this course continues to build on students’ success and help them perfect their listening, speaking, writing
and viewing skills, and abilities to understand and appreciate the
Chinese language and use it confidently and competently. This course focuses on studies and analysis of texts that cover topics such as personal finances, technology, peace and human rights, environment protection, health and fitness, crimes and justice, and any other topics that meet the needs and interests of students. At the same time, materials that reflect on Chinese literature and language are also looked at in depth, such as ancient Chinese poems and proverbs, classic and modern essays and articles, as well as more complicated sentence structures and vocabulary exercises. Lots of independent and group work is involved for students to develop skills in areas like critical thinking, information researching, problem solving, public speaking and using technologies.

The general goal of Spanish 20-3Y is to further students’ knowledge of Spanish, focusing on oral, written, comprehension and aural skills. Students will use Spanish effectively in a variety of situations and for a variety of purposes. Students will be effective global citizens through exploration of cultures of the Spanish-speaking world; students will also learn to use various strategies to maximize their learning and communication in Spanish.

The goal of this enriched course is the development of communicative competence in Spanish. Writing skills with emphasis on conversational and functional skills will be vital part of the course. Students will need to demonstrate independence and competency in applying previous grammatical structures. The course expands upon topics learned in 20-3Y and involves grammar study and skill development to reach or surpass the oral, reading and written requirements for IB.
Spanish 10-6Y (IB Prep)

In this enriched course you will begin to use Spanish language skills confidently and hold meaningful conversations. Your cultural exploration will include authentic literary works, real-life scenarios, arts and entertainment. You will understand and give your opinion about the rich and diverse culture of numerous Spanish–speaking countries in the world.
Spanish 20-6Y IB

Prerequisite: 70% Spanish 10-6Y (IB Preparation)
The goal of this course is the development of communicative competence in Spanish. Writing skills with emphasis on conversational and functional skills will be vital part of the course. Students will begin to demonstrate independence and competency in using previous grammatical structures. In addition, students will learn advanced grammatical structures and will begin to use them in structured and modeled situations. Spanish 20-6Y is a continuation of Spanish 10-6Y. The course will be mainly taught in Spanish.
Spanish 30-6Y IB

Prerequisite: Spanish 20-6Y IB
This course expands upon topics learned in 20-6Y IB and involves grammar study to reach or surpass the oral, reading and written requirements for IB. In Spanish 30-6Y particular Spanish Language functions will be revisited at various points in the year but from a different perspective, in broader contexts or at a slightly higher level of proficiency each time. Students will also access various reading materials including a novel and will complete oral projects in preparation for the IB oral internal assessment.
Physical Education 10 And Career & Life Management (CALM 20)

Note: Both P.E. 10 & CALM 20 are required courses for an Alberta High School Diploma. This course will offer Full IB students an opportunity to earn the 3 credits in Physical Education 10 and the 3 credits in CALM 20 required for their high school diploma in one 3 credit class block (75 hrs). This course will offer the same exciting and dynamic experience as the 8 credit course, but will compliment the schedule of our Full IB students. All critical learning outcomes from Physical Education 10 and CALM 20 will be covered.
Theory of Knowledge 35 IB

Prerequisite: for IB Diploma students only who have completed Social Studies 20 IB
This is a course which is necessary if one is pursuing the full diploma in the International Baccalaureate Program. It is a course which examines the origins and validity of various forms of knowledge and the various ways of knowing. Theory of Knowledge is a course for anyone with a keen, questioning mind.
Team Leadership 15
3 or 5 Credits
The acronym T.E.A.M. stands for “Together Everyone Achieves More” and this is exactly what this class is about! Students entering the Leadership Program in grade ten become engaged in events and volunteering that build school and community spirit. In Leadership 15, students work collaboratively with each other, Students’ Union, Leadership 25 and Leadership 35 according to their interests, values and strengths. The program is “Student Driven”! Students are required to volunteer in the school and surrounding community. These projects are based on the UNESCO Associated Schools framework; Education & Awareness, Volunteerism, Character and Learning to Live Together. Students will also engage in character development through guest speakers, leadership workshops, and self reflection. From completing the three year Leadership Program, students will have enhanced team work, communication, and project management skills. TEAM Leadership 15 can be taken in period 5 outside of the regular daily schedule.
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
Prerequisite: for IB Diploma students
The CAS program is at the heart of the IB programme. It encourages students to share their energy and special talents with others. Students may, for example, participate in theatre or musical productions, sports and/or community service activities. Students should, through these activities, develop greater awareness of themselves, concern for others and the ability to work cooperatively with other people. Students will work with a coordinator to assist them in their leadership development, and complete 150 hours of volunteer service over the course of Grade 11 and 12.
Extended Essay 35 IB
3 credits
Prerequisite: for IB Diploma students who have competed English 20-1 IB
The Extended Essay is an in-depth study of a topic within a subject area of the student’s choice. It provides IB students with an opportunity to engage in independent research. Students will learn the process of how to engage in personal research and how to communicate the ideas and information they have found logically and coherently to readers across the globe. All IB Diploma students must submit an Extended Essay in order to obtain their IB diploma.
Drama 10 (IB Prep)

Prerequisite: none
In this course you will develop a sound dramatic rehearsal process while honing the basic skills needed in performance: movement, improvisation, speech, theatre studies, technical theatre and basic acting. Drama 10(IB Preparation) is a 5 credit
course. Students that cannot fit Drama 10(IB Preparation) into
their daytime schedule can enrol in an after school section of the course that meets with the Advanced Acting 15 class.
Drama 20 IB – Standard Level
5 credits
Prerequisite: Drama 10 (IB Preparation)
There are four components: Theatre in the Making; Theatre in Performance World-wide; and the independent project portfolio. Students work on theatre forms from other cultures, traditions, and historical contexts with an emphasis on becoming reflective and critical practitioners who can analyze, perform and create theatre. Students will experience the roles of playwright, actor, director, designer, and critic. Development of the independent project portfolio begins at this level. Theory of Knowledge curricular links are addressed.
Drama 30 IB – Standard Level* (2011)

Prerequisite: Theatre Arts 20 IB
The student’s creativity and understanding of dramatic theory is extended through class exploration and execution of the One Act Festival: directing, production, design, construction, acting, and stage management. Drama 30 IB students complete a research investigation, practical performance proposal and their project portfolio which is to be sent away for external assessment.
