Pre-writing Activity

With a partner or in small groups brainstorm examples and ideas from the information you have researched, which show the following points:
bullet Paralympic participants are elite athletes who, like the athletes in the Olympics, are engaging in a competition that is universally appealing.
bullet Paralympic athletes, like Olympic athletes, require funding to achieve their goals.
bullet Television coverage of Paralympic events meets the needs of viewers for entertainment, and would aid athletes financially by encouraging sponsors.
Expository Writing Assignments

  1. Using the information you have researched about the Paralympics, write an editorial or a letter to the editor, advocating wider television coverage for the Paralympic games. Your article should include arguments concerning the entertainment appeal of the Paralympics to a universal audience. In order to make your writing convincing you need to give specific examples that show that participants in the Paralympic games are elite athletes, who, like the athletes in the Olympic Games are engaging in a competition that is universally entertaining.

Using the information you have researched, write an editorial or a letter to the editor arguing for television coverage of Paralympics and sponsoring of Paralympic athletes by corporations, similar to that of the Olympics.
