Student Activities

This outlines activities in the order students will do them. Some activities are oriented towards language arts, some to social studies, and some questions cover both areas. Teachers may choose to omit activities that do not suit their students' needs. Please feel free to adapt and edit as you see fit. Submissions for the Student Work section of the web site should be sent in as soon as possible after students complete the particular assignment.

bulletDiscuss background information with the students. Show the students the Paralympic Images to help them understand what the Paralympic movement is all about.

bulletResearch excerpts from Chapter 1 and Chapter 2  of Paralympics: Where Heroes Come and selected sites from the project web sites for history and rationale of Paralympics and then do the following questions.
bulletHistory Questions Questions on basic needs, wants, and ultimately an institution, and the creation of culture and community based on information found in history research.
bulletInstitutions Activity: Examining the Paralympic Games as an Institution in our Society: lesson on features of an institution using the IPC as an example of an institution.
bulletAthlete Profile Activity: Research Paralympic athletes, using the profiles from the book, as well as the athlete profiles from the Project Web Site page. You might also interview athletes through e-mail, discussion board, phone, or during a school visit.
