Part A: Map of Canada

Use an atlas to help you label a map of Canada with the provinces, territories, and capital cities. Be sure that your map is as accurate as possible (put the capital cities in the right place). Note: Nunavut and its capital may not be in the atlas you are using.

Part B: Province/Territory

Each group is assigned a province/territory to research. Use the library catalogue (Start, EPS Applications, Library Catalogue) to find a book on your province. Write the title and copyright date of your book below. (Hint: use the book with a copyright of 1998 or later.)

  1. Use the National Atlas of Canada and label a map of your province with the
    1. Capital city (Reference Maps>Provinces and Territories>your province) 
    2. Population density (People & Society >Population>Population Density). Color the area of your province with the highest population density (pencil crayons on library counter)
    3. National parks (choose 2 -- Reference>National> National Parks)
    4. Two major bodies of fresh water (Reference Maps>Provinces and Territories>your province)

2. Use the Canadian Encyclopedia or a book on your province to locate information. Hint: go to Canadian Encyclopedia, type province in search engine, go to first search result, click on the graphic – provincial fact sheet. Record your answers on this sheet or in a chart or table.

  2. Date of entering confederation (created as a province)
  3. Provincial floral emblem
  4. Economy based on?

3. Use Statistics Canada to locate information for your province. Hint: Do NOT use the search feature. Use the links under the headings (Economy, People, State) to locate the right chart. Record your answers on this sheet or in a chart or table.

  1. Total population
  2. Population by age group
  3. Unemployment rate
  4. Secondary school graduates
  5. Birth rate
  6. Death rate
  7. Crime rate
  8. # of federal electoral districts/constituencies
